At Golden Horse Feeds, we've always specialised in chaff. However, when processing chaff, you end up with a lot of fines - side product that is still nutritionally valuable but too messy to package for use. To stop them going to waste, our team were taking the fines home and giving them in heaps to their horses. The horses loved the taste, and would regularly chase the tractor around the paddock when delivery time arrived!
Still, even feeding at home, the amount of fines was much too large. That's where we came up with the idea of forming those fines into the pellets that we now have as part of our range. They've been a runaway success with our customers (and luckily, with Janie's horses as well when the fines got taken away!). If you haven't tried them yet, you definitely should.
Why use our meadow and lucerne pellets?
For starters, our pellets are completely made from 100% premium New Zealand meadow and lucerne, with no additives. Just like our chaff, they are rich in calcium and other naturally occurring vitamins and minerals.
Whether you choose meadow or lucerne, having feed in pellet form offers a whole new host of ways to feed. For example, they're super mobile. If you're headed to a show, our pellets are a lot easier to carry than big bags of chaff. They're also easy to give as treats, making them great snacks to tempt horses in from the paddock or reward them for work well done.
You don't have to choose between standard chaff or the pellets either. Our pellets and our chaff products work hand in hand. They can be fed together or substituted for one another.
How to feed the pellets
Our pellets can be dry fed as well as soaked into a mash with water, making it ideal for older animals who struggle with chewing. Pellets work perfectly as a chaff substitute and make for a scrumptious treat.
When introducing these pellets into your horse's diet, start by introducing 0.5kg (half a scoop) of pellets, then gradually increase the amount to fit your horse's dietary needs.
They're not just for horses either - they can be fed to a variety of stock. We've seen them used as feed at lifestyle blocks and for calf club projects, including by Pippa's son Ben. Ben and his four-legged charge were named champions in the competition, in part due to the calf's excellent condition!
Give the pellets a go and enjoy the nutrition of quality chaff in a super convenient form. Choose from either meadow or lucerne pellets in 16kg bags - either reach out to the Golden Horse Feeds team to organise local delivery in Auckland and Waikato, or check out one of our North Island stockists.
